Resume Flusher

Title: resume flusher

Description: Although I can happily say I am back to work, I created this piece as a constant reminder to myself how hard it was to be unemployed. Our nation has been through some pretty hard economic times in recent years and it has taken its toll on the American family. I think everyone can understand how difficult it is out there to land a new job much less get an employer to read your resume. There are some honest hard working people out there who can’t seem to catch a break. These are some scary times we’re living in folks.

Richard - 08/14/2010 - 6:36 am

Interesting piece, man. But Amen to that! I’m glad you (and I) are back at work now.

RWUA

Title: RWUA

Description: America, I’m going to share a very sensitive and emotional story with you.

It was a warm summer morning at a serene Santa Monica community park. With iPod in hand I decided to get in some much needed cardio work. After a few laps, I stopped to do some jump-rope.  Almost immediately a curious little furry friend climbed down to take a look at the action. At that point, there was no inclination that a heated brawl was about to ensue. He began to charge at me with such bravado and aggression that I back-peddled to escape the attack. I created some space and thwarted the attack with my jump rope but this little S.O.B wasn’t going to let up! I decided to get the hell out of dodge before I find myself in the hospital for 20 plus rabies shots. Needless to say I was stripped of my manhood as I nursed my emotional wound for days to come while that little bastard basked in all his glory.

Sam - 07/22/2010 - 11:28 am

Should have dropped some line-training on his little punk a#*!

Soph - 07/22/2010 - 9:04 pm

Don’t worry babe… Max will seek out Squirrel Junior and payback will be a b*tch!!

Richard - 07/31/2010 - 6:10 pm

Hahaha…ya know, if it were ME, I would’ve taken down the little rat bastard! To each his own..lol. =P Nice piece, man. Looking forward to the next!

forward nerima

Title: Forward Nerima

Description: To commemorate my brother-in-law’s bold move to Japan, I’d like to send him off with a little parting gift. Like a bird leaving its nest in search of new beginnings, Richard is about to embark on a journey few people would ever have the courage to do themselves. This adventure will take him out of the shadows of monotony and into the light of challenge and discovery. Jamaicans have a saying, “forward Jamaica!” but I say, “forward Nerima!!” Congratulations Richard on your journey.  You will be missed.

Richard - 05/31/2010 - 12:34 am

I have a new favorite now! Awesome piece man…I really appreciate you taking time to create this piece in my honor. Will miss ya! Now it’s Forward Nerima…

Ninjawizard - 06/01/2010 - 8:51 am

Now this is sweet! There is so much going on in this pic but yet it remains so simple and clean. Good luck Richard “Stay strong and believe in yourself” I bet Richard loves the Black Mamba poster.

SOPH - 06/01/2010 - 2:07 pm

You amaze me.

Sam - 06/24/2010 - 4:57 pm

I was hoping to see a poster of the Camp Fuji chow hall on the back wall. Great piece my man.

Seabiscuits

Title: seabiscuits
Description:
Everyone has to take risks in life… and here is one of mine.  In this portrait piece, I am portraying my parents-in-law as a married horse couple stoically posing for the camera. The portrait is encased in a Victorian oval frame in efforts to domesticate the animalistic nature of the beasts. If you’re at all familiar with Chinese zodiac, you’ll recognize that the year of the Horse embodies freedom and independence. These are as essential to Horse-born people as the air they breathe. They are constantly on the move and have a low boredom threshold. Well folks… my in-laws are both Horse-people and wild ones at that. They cannot plant their feet at home longer than to rest their heads and disappear at a second glance. They come in through the front door only to escape through the back. A zodiac site stated that the best time of the Horse is from 11:00 a.m. to 12:59 p.m. Need I say more?

Richard - 04/23/2010 - 9:47 pm

Awesome piece, man! For whatever reason, your pieces with family ties truly brings out your raw talent as an artist. Now design a piece for my Goat ass. I’m only kidding…lol.

Celine - 04/25/2010 - 11:07 pm

Wow, you are good David! They do look like my brother Louis and sister in law, Rose.

the birds

Title: the birds
Description:
A morning cup of joe and an early bird observation in my backyard served as inspiration for this simple yet illustrative piece.  I sat and watched four birds fly in and perch on some crossing wires.  Their social behavior very much mimicked those of humans.  Why do some choose to sit independently from their assumed ‘partners’ while others take flight and perch together?  Speaking in terms of couples, it brought awareness to the fact that some couples couldn’t be separate from one another while others yearn for independence.  I, for one, find more joy in being near my wife than distant from her… and couldn’t be happier that my wire mate reciprocates that very sentiment.

politics

Title: politics

Description: Hope this piece strikes a cord with some of you. Hope that the two parties start working on what’s truly important. Hope that they can stop all this mudslinging. Hope that they stop blaming each other and start blaming themselves for whats wrong with America. Hope that they can make this country great again. And last but not least, hope that they can give this guy a hand. His job isn’t easy.

Richard - 04/08/2010 - 11:08 am

Although I am not really a political person, I can appreciate this piece and the message behind it. Glad to see you back on the designing front…

Dad - 04/08/2010 - 12:09 pm

Wow! This is Hope in it’s purest form. Pitting the hearts of a few good people against the evil that lurks in the hearts of many.
Well Done!

ruby - 04/08/2010 - 4:15 pm

i really really like this!!!! you have his swagger and strength down pat!

sonja smith - 04/08/2010 - 5:07 pm

keep it up, you are GREAT!

Ninjawizard - 04/09/2010 - 5:52 am

I agree with Richard, I’m not too hip on politics but the message is strong with this one Jedi. You need to just go ahead and e-mail this to President Obama I think he will appreciate it. Also please submit this to the Wallstreet Journal political cartoon section this needs to be published. Did I mention this is just plain fantastic.

Soph - 04/09/2010 - 8:59 am

This is a very simple yet very powerful piece – it speaks so much more to me than the intention it may elude. Great stuff.

shake n' bake - 04/09/2010 - 12:06 pm

I love his ears, right on! In terms of what you’re telling teh world, I really like the horizon piece of it, totally communicates your message. Great job Dave!

Charis Tsevis - 04/15/2010 - 9:02 pm

Excellent piece. Congratulations!

Marcia - 04/22/2010 - 4:27 pm

I agree with NINJAWIZARD. This should be sent to Wall Street Journal. You are so insightful. The message is clear. Pres. Obama just might be the one to bring both parties together.
Proud of YOU !!!

i want my golden egg!

Title: i want my golden egg
Description: I designed this piece with one thought in mind, “What happened to parental respect?”. Today, American children are more spoiled than ever and have lost all respect for their parents. More and more children tend look down on their parents rather than up. Good job America!

Richard - 03/03/2010 - 11:59 pm

Interesting piece. The title reminds me of a certain childhood movie involving some chocolates, 5 golden tickets, and 4 spoiled brats!

Soph - 03/04/2010 - 5:54 pm

Let’s hope that won’t be us looking up at our children when we’re shrinking prunes. Nice piece babe :)

Richard - 03/04/2010 - 11:15 pm

YEAH! If Max and Illyria starts to look down on their Elders, I’ll know where to look for blame…you two!

Marcia - 04/22/2010 - 4:30 pm

Max has a strong foundation. He will be well balanced. Then again, I am biased.

les oranges au havre

Title: les oranges au havre
Description: Once again, my wife served as the inspiration for this piece.  Sophie has always had very vivid memories of her grandfather.  The very last time they spent time together he peeled her oranges and kept replenishing even before the last wedge was eaten.  As in most Asian cultures it is uncommon to show affection or whisper words of endearment… however, with the oranges, her grandfather spoke a thousand words.  It was a simple gesture that meant the world.  As I wasn’t there to witness this account… I could only hope I did this beautiful story justice.

Richard - 02/21/2010 - 3:09 pm

Cool piece…I Like it! This one would especially be cool as a poster hung on a wall somewhere.

Jeanne - 02/21/2010 - 9:54 pm

David, I did not realize how talent you are. I love this one soo much. It is exactly the way how I see my father who was and with little Sophie going across street to ED supermarket or to the Saturday farmer market in front of my father’s apartment. That exactly how Sophie would dress up when she was little girl, I still have the picture of her lying on the grass, both hands on her cheeks and a flower on her hair in front of the famous cathedrale of Rouen when the family made a trip there long long time ago. Perfect reflection of time past. I would not mind having a this poster hung in my apartment. Sophie, you should print one copy in 8.5 x 11 and give it to Ba noi, she would cry looking at it.

Soph - 02/22/2010 - 10:09 am

This is my favorite piece… I love it babe! Thank you for immortalizing this moment for me.

Ninjawizard - 02/22/2010 - 10:54 am

Fantastic job, I agree with Richard this could be made into a poster.

Dave - 02/22/2010 - 12:17 pm

Thank you Jeanne. Your feedback was extremely helpful. I am so glad you like it. It meant alot to me do this for the wife. She is a great inspiration to me.

Dave - 02/22/2010 - 12:19 pm

You’re welcome wife. You inspire me not just with art but life!

Dave - 02/22/2010 - 12:20 pm

Thank you guys. I just might have to print this one out.

Celine - 02/23/2010 - 9:15 pm

This piece has brought tears to my eyes because it reminded me of my father. It’s beautiful but yet simple just as life in a little town of France call Le Havre. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece in memory of my father.

Dave - 02/24/2010 - 11:44 am

Celine, thank you so much for your feedback. This piece meant alot to me as well. I love that Sophie shared this little piece of her past with me and I was so honored to be able to illustrate it for.

sonja smith - 04/08/2010 - 5:03 pm

this warms my heart, i love it soooo much

california not nice

Title: California Not Nice
Description: This piece was inspired by the growing frustration of Californians toward their state: Frustrations with out-of-control housing costs, rising unemployment rate, high cost of living among a slew of other issues… even the bear on our flag is bailing.  My toddler son often attaches the words “not nice” to things… “Monster not nice… dino not nice,” well I say, “California not nice!”  Such a simple yet bold and direct statement.

Soph - 02/18/2010 - 12:23 pm

I love the seal mark… looks greak!! XOXO

Richard - 02/18/2010 - 12:50 pm

Great work, man. This is one of my favorite pieces. Keep up the good work. And I agree, California is not nice! That’s why I’m leaving! =P

Ninjawizard - 02/18/2010 - 5:34 pm

Haha this is a sick Design. I would totally wear this on a shirt…hint hint. The watermark reminds me of that wax ring seal from Pirates of the Caribbean. I likes.

sonja smith - 02/18/2010 - 6:45 pm

GREAT stuff, I want them all!!! How do I purchase them?

Two Daisies and a Leaf Blower

Title: Two Daisies and a Leaf Blower
Description: The leaf blower is a representation of me blowing away a cloud of dust.  Within the cloud of dust is a cluster of individual images symbolizing; politics-gone-wrong, religious extremism and terror, former relationships, failed friendships, and an unusual upbringing.  These are some of the things I’ve learned to expel from my life as they added no value yet took away so much.  To the right of the piece is a pot of two daisies representing my wife and son… my positive influences.  Regardless what is going on in your life, struggles and pains…  they bring a sense of calm and tranquility. They are and should be what matter to you most.  FIND YOUR DAISY.

sonja smith - 02/18/2010 - 7:23 pm

you are so talented, man, i love this!

Celine - 02/23/2010 - 9:25 pm

I like this one too! Well illustrated and meaningful.
